Biography. Wolfgang Iser was born in Marienberg, Germany.His parents were Paul and Else (Steinbach) Iser. He studied literature in the universities of Leipzig and Tübingen before receiving his PhD in English at Heidelberg with a dissertation on the world view of Henry Fielding (Die Weltanschauung Henry Fieldings, 1950).

Wolfgang Iser is a literary theorist and scholar who has been internationally recognized for his work on reception theory and reader-response criticism. He was born in Marienberg, Germany on July 22, 1926. Following his high school education, he was drafted into the German army in 1944 and released from a prisoner of war camp in 1945.

1950 wurde er in Heidelberg promoviert, wo er sich 1957 auch habilitierte. An der Universität Würzburg war er seit 1960 Ordinarius. Im Jahre 1963 ging er an die Universität Köln.
